Orofino Junior-Senior High

Orofino Junior-Senior High is a small rural school of about 350 students in grades 7-12. We are a title one school, therefore funding is minimal at best. This year we held a poll at the beginning of the year asking students how many have read an entire book within the course of a year; less than 50% have completed a book since 6th grade!  We, teachers, believe that this is a lack of encouraging reading across curriculums, as well as the idea that reading in class stops at elementary school. 

I’m hosting this fundraiser as a means to establish current, high-interest novels in my classroom for students to check out and enjoy.  Since we started school August 27, students read everyday-and they are doing it!  They’re reading and loving it!  This just goes to show how having high-interest reading materials is effective in establishing lifelong learners. My hope is to put a book in every student’s hands that makes them want to continue to read for enjoyment or for educational purposes; not because they have to but because they want to.
